Sustainability

WHAT YOU BUY DOES MATTER

The fashion industry is symptomatic of a wider throw-away society, rife with over consumption and excessive production of short-lived, low quality, disposable products. It is the second largest polluter in the world, collectively using more water than any other, apart from agriculture, and is responsible for the unfair working conditions of millions of people.

We need a change of priorities, we need a change of heart and we need it now.

OUR IMPACT

Producing clothes will always have an impact. Our challenge is to minimise it and whilst we know we can always do more, we are committed to achieving long-term sustainability.

SUSTAINABLE, LONG LASTING MATERIALS

Our goal is to deliver you the most sustainable ranges available – our target is for all products we offer to be made from 100% sustainable materials. We are not quite there yet, but we are getting very close! By sustainable materials, we mean non-conventional materials that have a lower impact on both nature and human health, such as organic cotton, bamboo and recycled polyester.

"Organic Cotton, isn't just softer, it's better!"

  • Better for the environment
  • Better for farmers & their families
  • Better for you and your children

Organic cotton and bamboo are grown naturally and sustainably, without herbicides, pesticides or any other harmful chemicals. These safe farming methods preserve the soil, conserve energy, and help to protect the health of the people in the community where the plants are grown.

We genuinely believe that using 100% organic materials across our range results in far higher quality products. Products that are undoubtedly better for the communities who help produce them, better for our children that use them and better for our environment.

To assure that our materials and processes are as promised, we work with various certifications and standards covering materials, production and the employees in the factories we are working with. We mainly work with GOTS, Fairtrade, Oeko-Tex, OCS, Bionic Finish Eco, GRS, FSC, SA-8000.

LABELLNG AND PACKAGING

The choices of material does not only apply to the main fabrics, but also the trims, labelling, and packing of a product. Today, the majority of all these details are organic, recycled or biodegradable. Additionally, we reuse cartons from our suppliers for outgoing shipments to customers, our stores, and retailers.

When a package is good to go, we optimize our packing methods to fill every load and ship goods from different suppliers together whenever possible. Our policy is to use sea and truck transport for bulk production depending on its origin. We only use sea/air or air transport on rare occasions to secure quality or to keep critical deliveries.

CHEMICALS

Chemicals are needed in all kinds of textile products including ours – from the manufacturing of raw material to dyeing, printing, through to final design and finish. The challenge is to avoid the toxic ones that are harmful to the environment, animals and our health. Since our products are mainly used by children, chemical management is vitally important. We actively work to limit the use and waste of chemicals in all of our products and only work with partners who share this commitment.

SOCIAL RIGHTS

Our social responsibility must be far reaching – from design and manufacturing, through to communication, market positioning and sales. We want to give children the freedom to choose clothes that match their personality, mood, and creativity. The majority of our clothes are unisex, and we try to avoid categorizing our products based on normative gender.

Like most other companies in the clothing industry, we do not own any factories. Instead, we share the responsibility together with other brands. We source factories with sustainability and fair labour and safe working environments as key criteria and priority and therefore choose facilities already certified with the well-known third party standards such as Fairtrade and SA-8000.

Together we can make a difference. Join us in an effort to stop modern day slavery by elevating the global standard for textile production.

"We only want children to play in our products, not make them!"

  • No child labour ever: Our products are only made by adults who are working by choice and treated well
  • Fare wages: Above-standard wages are paid to every worker so they can provide for their families
  • Safe work environment: We only work with factories that ensure safe working conditions that keep everyone‘s health and safety in mind
  • Reasonable work days: Workers are capped on how many hours they can work per week and are granted vacation time and holidays

YOUR IMPACT

Tilly & Jasper together with other clothing brands has a great responsibility for changing today’s sense of fast fashion. But we are not in this alone – how you care for your garment accounts for 25 % of its environmental impact. Let’s make the best out of those numbers.
Here are five things you can do to minimize your impact and prolong the life of your wardrobe favourites.

LOOK FOR GREEN GARMENTS

All fabrics release microfibers in the wash. The problem is that microfibers in synthetic fabric are not biodegradable. These plastic fibres eventually end up in our oceans traveling up the food chain. So in the long run, organic materials are not only better for the global environment, but for all living creatures including you.

CHOOSE WISELY

Garments with high quality and long-lasting design are essential for building a sustainable wardrobe. Sooner or later when the little ones outgrow their clothes, a good piece of garment is always wanted by someone else.

REPAIR AND REWEAR

Give your garment a second chance by covering stubborn stains or holes with leftover fabric or patches. When it’s time to say goodbye – recycle, resell or donate your garments to an organization.

WASH WITH CARE

For many garments, the laundry bag is not the place to be. Hang your clothes on a rack and let the air do its magic. Remove smaller stains with natural basics from your kitchen, such as white vinegar, baking soda, and lemon, and only wash your garments when needed.

BE BRAVE

Break a pattern and set the standard for future generations. Ask brands about their sustainability work and support the frontrunners.
